Clearing grey

The filter pond for the treatment of the grey water from the kitchen and the shower was installed four months ago (http://www.stammer.nl/gallery132/1100_6306_filter_pond.htm ). The grey water streams into the pond from a pipe from above and is filtered by several layers of gravel and sand. There is no soil so the plants can get their nutrients only form the grey water. There is almost no flooding, the evapotranspiration from plants and the substrate is substantial, especially during the last extremely hot weeks. Only rarely a layer of water can be seen, important against mosquitoes.

In the filter pond I planted or sowed six species. At the moment these grow very well: Iris pseudacorus, Mentha pulegium, Lythrum salicaria and Juncus effusus.
Eupatorium cannabinum and Polygonum bistorta survive but (still) not showing signs of feeling comfortable.

Mentha pulegium, native in Aragon, Spain, as all the species used in the filter pond, has a peculiar way of growing. First it seems to grow only upwards and these stems produce relatively quickly flowers in mid-summer. But then the plant produces horizontal stems, creeping over the substrate, with no flowers, nicely forming this way a protective green carpet.

El estanque filtro para las aguas grises de la cocina y la ducha fue instalada hace 4 meses (http://www.stammer.nl/gallery132/1100_6306_filter_pond.htm). Las aguas grises entran por una tubería desde arriba y se filtran por varias capas de grava y arena. No hay tierra así que las plantas únicamente pueden sacar nutrientes de las aguas grises. Apenas se producen desbordamientos, la evaporación de las plantas y sobre todo del sustrato por la tremenda ola de calor durante las ultimas semanas es importante. Rara vez se produce una capa de agua por encima del sustrato, importante para que no haya mosquitos.

En el estanque filtro planté o sembré seis especies. Ahora tiran muy bien: Iris pseudacorus, Mentha pulegium, Lythrum salicaria y Juncus effusus.
Eupatorium cannabinum y Polygonum bistorta sobreviven pero (todavía) no muestran señales de sentirse a gusto.

Mentha pulegium, autóctona como todas las especies utilizadas en el estanque filtro, tiene una forma curiosa de crecer. Primero parece crecer solamente hacia arriba, y estas tallas producen de forma relativamente rápida abundantes flores violetas azules en pleno verano. Pero luego la planta produce tallas completamente horizontales, sobre el suelo, sin flores. Forma así poco a poco una capa protectora verde bastante graciosa.
