Grey with red

After experiencing some heavy storms with horizontal rain and hail it became clear that the exterior walls needed good protection. We did several tests and opted for silicate mineral paint: sustainable, vapor permeable, resistant and persistent. We applied 4 layers: 2 layers with a transparent silicate potassic primer ('glasswater') and then 2 layers with silicate mineral paint (`GekkoSol`, from the firm Embarro/Kreidezeit). The last layer received almost a kilo of pigment (`Umbra negra acastañada') which rendered the final warm grey colour.

The water tightness of the green roof is provided by an EPDM sheet which also covers the roof borders. This sheet is supposed to withstand solar radiation (with a warranty of 50 years), but I painted the borders with a red acrylic paint, partly for protection partly for the nice colour (in October 2010: http://www.stammer.nl/natureswitchedon/stammer_diary_uk_101002.htm…). But this 3 layer paint didn`t last after some years and I decided to fix galvanized metal sheet, which can be ordered with the necessary folds to wrap around the border. Fortunately they sell it in a nice red colour similar to the anterior one, saving the cost and effort of painting at the same offering a lifelong protection. The mounting is relatively straightforward with screws and watertight washers, making incisions in the sheet to facilitate the bends.

Por la experiencia de unas cuantas tormentas con lluvia horizontal y granizo quedó claro que las paredes exteriores necesitaban una buena protección. Después de unos ensayos al final opté por pintura mineral de silicato: sostenible, respirable, resistente y duradero. Aplicamos un total de 4 capas: 2 con silicato-potásico transparente como fondo e imprimación y luego 2 capas de pintura mineral de silicato, GekkoSol de la firma Embarro/Kreidezeit. La última capa lleva pigmento ('Umbra negra acastañada') que le da un aspecto final de un gris caluroso.

La impermeabilidad del tejado verde esta garantizada por la lona butílica (EPDM), que también cubre los bordes del tejado. En principio esta lona aguanta la luz solar (con una garantía de 50 años), pero pinté los bordes con una pintura acrílica, en parte para mayor protección y en parte por el bonito color rojo (en octubre 2010: http://www.stammer.nl/lanaturalezaactivada/stammer_diary_es_101002.htm). No obstante, como esta pintura de tres capas no aguantó después de varios años, decidí colocar una chapa de metal galvanizado. Esta chapa se puede encargar doblada, es decir con un perfil para envolver bien el borde. Por suerte la venden en un color rojo, que me gusta, similar al de la pintura que utilice; de este modo, se ahorra la pintura, a la vez que el borde y la lona EPDM quedan protegidos de por vida. El montaje es relativamente sencillo, con tornillos y arandelas estancas, haciendo incisiones en la chapa para facilitar las curvas.
