Grey water

For the treatment of the grey water (from the washbasin and shower of the bathroom and the washbasin of the kitchen) I installed a filter pond in a relatively low area to the north of the house. With a maximum depth of 60 cm, it covers about 4 square meters. I used a waterproof EPDM sheet, protected at the bottom with an old carpet. It was filled up with successive layers of sand, river gravel and road gravel (with a rough surface) and on the surface a thin layer of fine gravel, left over from the screening of the sand for the earthen floor. For the moment this pond doesn't have an outlet. We still don`t know how much water will evaporate and transpire by the vegetation. The income of water from the shower is usually important but in our case somewhat less because we also use the solar shower in the greenhouse. The idea is the development of a marshy zone that occasionally overflows, creating a relative humid area around the brim. I sowed already about 60 seeds of the Yellow flag (Iris pseudacorus) as the main helophyte. This species gives good results in the other ponds and is quite resistant to the occasional dry period. I will soon plant cuttings of aquatic species like Mentha pulegium, Veronica becabunga, Lythrum salicaria and more Iris pseudacorus. And it is of course interesting to see what other species will establish themselves spontaneously.

The little channel on the left in the image carries water from the roof and drainage of the new wing, to ensure the input of water during longer periods of our absence.

Para el tratamiento de las aguas grises (del lavabo y la ducha del nuevo cuarto de baño y el lavabo de la cocina) instalé un estanque-filtro en una zona relativamente baja, al norte de la casa. Se trata de una superficie de unos 4 metros cuadrados con una profundidad máxima de 60 cm. Utilicé lona impermeable de EPDM, por debajo protegida por una alfombra vieja. Se rellenó con sucesivas capas de arena, grava de río, grava de carretera (con cantos más vivos) y en la superficie una capa de una grava muy fina, sobrante del cribado de la arena para el suelo interior de barro. De momento este estanque no tiene salida. Todavía no sabemos cuánta agua va a evaporarse y transpirar por la vegetación. La cantidad de agua de la ducha suele ser importante pero en nuestro caso algo más limitado porque tenemos una segunda ducha (solar) en el invernadero. La idea sería desarrollar una zona pantanosa que de vez en cuando rebosara, creando una zona relativamente húmeda alrededor. Sembré ya unas 60 semillas de Lirio amarillo (Iris pseudacorus) como planta helófita principal. Este lirio ha dado buenos resultados en los otros estanques y soporta muy bien períodos relativamente secos. Más adelante plantaré esquejes de especies acuáticas como Mentha pulegium, Veronica becabunga, Lythrum salicaria y más Iris pseudacorus. Por supuesto será interesante ver que otras especies se van a establecer de forma espontánea.

El canalillo a la izquierda en la imagen aporta agua sobrante del tejado y drenaje de la nueva ala, para asegurar también la aportación de agua en periodos más largos de nuestra ausencia.
