Longing for spring

Everything about this species Echium vulgare (Viper's Bugloss or Blueweed) seems to point to snakes: its bundles of flowers, stems, seed and the style of the pistil. Strangely enough they usually don`t mention the fact that also its new leaves, even now in mid-winter, resemble these animals. The genus name Echium comes from the Greek ekios (vibora) and it`s not strange that the ancients saw the plants as a remedy against snake bites.
The young leaves seem also to long for the coming spring. And so do I, waiting for higher temperatures and sunny days to be able to continue with the construction works of the new wing (on the left in the photograph). The next phase will be the installation of an earthen floor with a 10cm-layer of a wet mix of clay, sand, gravel and straw. For this mix to dry completely in a reasonable time (about 6 weeks) you need warmer and sunnier days than we have now with this exceptionally rainy winter.

Todos los aspectos de esta especie Echium vulgare (Viborera, Buglosa o Chupamieles) parecen apuntar a las serpientes: ramilletes florales, tallos, semillas y el estilo del ovario. Curiosamente no suelen mencionar que también las nuevas hojas, ahora incluso en pleno invierno, recuerdan mucho a las víboras. El nombre del genero Echium proviene del griego ekios (vibora) y no es de extrañar que los antiguos (Dioscorides) veian esta plantas como medicinas contra las picaduras de estas animales.
Las hojas jóvenes también parecen ahora aspirar a la primavera venidera. Y asi también voy yo, esperando a que vienen temperaturas mas altas y días mas soleados para poder continuar con las obras de la nueva ala (a la izquierda en la foto). Es que la siguiente tarea va a ser el suelo de arcilla con una capa de unos 10 cm de una mezcla bastante humeda de arcilla, arena, grava y paja. Para que esta masa se seque en un tiempo razonable (unas 6 semanas) hacen faltan dias mas calurosos y soleados que tenemos ahora con este invierno tan excepcionalmente lluvioso.
