Unblocking sun rays

Now that the window is provided with a pane we can get an idea of the interior climate in the new wing. The original `garden` house (on the right) was very easy to heat due to the extreme insulation qualities of the straw bale walls, the relatively small space and the insulated wooden floor. The new wing is almost twice as big, it`s partly built into the ground (1 meter on one side) and it has an earthen floor, which all add up to a bigger thermal mass, making the inside temperature stable but not easy to increase. In fact it now takes a lot of heating with the wooden stove to get the heat into the new wing. The big window exposed to the south must help the heating and in the photograph I have just severely pruned a group of almond trees to give the sun free way but unfortunately the last weeks have been very misty. So it`s still too early to value the heating behavior of the new wing in winter but it`s already quite clear that in summer it must be easy to keep it cool.

Una vez la ventana provista de doble cristal, podemos hacernos una idea del clima del interior de la nueva ala. La caseta original (a la derecha) fue muy fácil de calentar debido al aislamiento extremo de los muros de balas de paja, el espacio relativamente reducido y el suelo de madera (con paja como aislante). La nueva ala es casi el doble de grande, está parcialmente metida en la tierra (un metro de un lado) y tiene el suelo de barro; todo ello supone mucha más masa térmica, haciendo la temperatura interior estable pero difícil de incrementar. De hecho, cuesta mucho llevar el calor de la estufa de leña al nuevo cuarto. La ventana grande expuesta al sur, tiene que ayudar a calentar. Acabo de podar un grupo de almendros para dar libre paso a los rayos solares, aunque desafortunadamente en las últimas semanas hubo muchas nieblas. Así que todavía es pronto para valorar el comportamiento térmico de la nueva ala en invierno, pero ya parece bastante claro que será fácil mantenerla fresca en verano.
